FRANKFURT - Bayern Munich began the defence of its Bundesliga title on Friday by beating Wolfsburg 2-1 with goals from Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben shortly before and after the interval. Stan Olejniczak Jersey Retro . Bayern dominated the match until a goal by Ivica Olic in the 52nd minute that breathed new life into Wolfsburgs game. Wolfsburg wasted a tremendous late opportunity to earn a point and Robben hit the crossbar in stoppage time. "It would have been difficult for us if they had made it 2-2," Bayern director Matthias Sammer said. Both teams were missing several injured players. Bayern was without Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, among others. But central defender Holger Badstuber returned to the Bundesliga after missing 20 months with a knee injury and two operations. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola gave 17-year-old Gianluca Gaudino, son of former Germany international Maurizio Gaudino, his Bundesliga debut and the teenager had a good game, nearly setting up a goal. New Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski failed to score and was substituted late in the second half. Guardiola had predicted that his team would face a difficult first half of the season due to the many injuries and because many players were still getting into shape after the World Cup. But he started with five of his six Germany players, plus Robben, who also played throughout the World Cup with third-placed Netherlands. And Robben was one of the top players in the season opener. Lewandowski set up Mueller early but Mueller tried to play back the ball instead of shooting and the Wolfsburg defence cleared. Gaudino then chipped a pass and Lewandowski attempted an acrobatic first-time effort but Wolfsburgs goalkeeper Max Gruen palmed the ball over. Bayern opened the scoring in the 37th when Robben faked Luiz Gustavo and sent in a low cross that was knocked in from close range by Mueller. Mueller began the move that led to Bayerns second goal in the 47th, feeding Lewandowski, who launched Robben. Josuha Guilavogui appeared to move aside and Robben had the space he needed to slot the ball inside the post. Wolfsburg got back into the match when Olic picked up a throw-in and fired onto the underside of the crossbar and into the net of his former team. Junior Malanda should have salvaged the point for Wolfsburg in the 79th. He raced in to connect with a low cross from Maximilan Arnold but the ball hit Bayern and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuers leg and bounced off the crossbar. It fell to Malanda but he hit it with his shin and managed to miss the target from just one meter (yard) out. Bayerns substitute Sebastian Rode found the net in the 84th but the play was called offside in a questionable decision. From Pierre LeBrun While Anaheim GM Bob Murray said earlier this season he was not going to trade Jonas Hiller despite the fact hes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, some sources have told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that Murray might be willing to move another goalie. https://www.cheapjerseyslines.com/jordan-franks-jersey-retro/ . Tensions rose in the first period when Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik hit Bruins forward Loui Eriksson with what appeared to be a clean hit.Following their end-of-season collapse, Dave Nonis told TSN Radio 1050 that hes looking to get the Leafs back to where they were two seasons ago when the team broke their seven-year playoff drought. The GM said the additions of Leo Komarov, Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak were made with the expectation that the veterans would set an on-ice example of the way the Leafs want their top players to compete. “Those players can generate a lot of emotion and they can bring players into the fight with them, and thats what we had two years ago and we need to get it back this year,” Nonis said. Despite the addition of two defencemen, Nonis said he wasnt overly concerned about his back-ends overall talent level, but felt like their fit as a group of six wasnt ideal. “We wanted to change the way we played the game. With Robidas and Roman, youre talking about guys who play very very hard and the compete-level of those guys is a big part of their game and we think itll rub off with the rest of our group.” Besides the players he did sign and acquire, Nonis also weighed in on the loss of centre Dave Bolland, and the Josh Gorges situation, in which the veteran blueliner accepted a deal to the Sabres after vetoing a trade that would have sent him to Toronto. “We did put a significant offer on the table for him,” Nonis said of the Bolland negotiations. “We felt it was reflective of his value to us, where he should be paid and there was another team that felt like he should be paid more.” On Gorges: “I may find that odd, but thatts his choice and hes earned that right. Curtis DeLoatch Jersey Retro. ” To round out his roster, Nonis mentioned he is still in the market for forward depth, pointing out the Leafs are looking to put an emphasis on increasing the reliance on their fourth line. “Your third and fourth lines have to contribute,” Nonis said, adding that he recognizes the leagues top teams use their fourth line for between eight and 12 minutes a game in order to lighten the load on top-end players and prevent them from wearing down. In addition to possible future free agent additions, Nonis speculated Josh Leivo, David Broll and possibly Sam Carrick could challenge for a roster spots up front next season, while on the back-end, Petter Granberg and Stuart Percy could work their way into the mix. Addressing the rumours surrounding back-up goaltender James Reimer, Nonis said he is fielding offers for the 26-year-old, but if a deal cant be reached expects him to be ready for the start of camp. “If theres a deal that makes sense for us to move James Reimer, and makes us better and gives us assets that are reflective of what he is, which is a goaltender who has been a no. 1, who could challenge for a no. 1 here, then youll look to do it,” Nonis said. “But its difficult finding quality goaltenders. We think he is one and I would expect if there isnt a deal that makes sense that he would come to camp in the best shape that he could possibly be in with the mindset to play in as many games as he can.” Nonis: Leafs looking to increase compete-level ' ' '
